Therm and Verra Release Updated Refrigerant Leak Avoidance Methodology with Broadened Eligibility

LAKE FOREST, IL: Nov. 5, 2024 - Therm Solutions, Inc., an award-winning driver of food supply chain decarbonization, announced an updated methodology for refrigerant leak avoidance published by Verra. The new version of Verified Carbon Standard Methodology VM0001 Refrigerant Leak Detection expands the range of eligible technologies, allowing a broader set of refrigerant leak detection and monitoring solutions to qualify for generating carbon credits. The update makes it easier for businesses across the United States to leverage cutting-edge leak detection to reduce super-pollutant refrigerant emissions.

Leak detection and avoidance are critical parts of managing toxic refrigerants, as they help to prevent the emission of atmosphere-damaging gasses. With the updated methodology, Therm projects can provide faster and more efficient leak avoidance services. By using indirect detection technology to monitor refrigerant systems in real-time, the projects can detect and remedy leaks quickly, reducing the amount of environmental damage caused by grocery stores.

This methodology update arrives at a critical time: businesses can start eligible leak avoidance projects immediately under the new framework. However, project eligibility will end once the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act mandates the phasedown of HFCs nationwide.

"Expanding the scope of the VM0001 methodology is a breakthrough that gives businesses more flexibility to prevent emissions from high-impact refrigerants,” said Fritz Troller, CEO and co-founder of Therm Solutions, Inc. “Therm is excited to lead the charge in providing solutions that are both scalable and urgently needed to combat climate change.”

Therm's updated methodology enables more businesses to adopt advanced leak detection technologies, making it easier to reduce emissions from refrigerants across grocery and retail sectors. With Verra’s expanded guidelines, Therm is driving scalable climate solutions that support immediate emission reductions, reinforcing refrigerant management as a crucial climate action.
